How the fee stack works

A Shopify sale is taxed twice before you see money. First the payment side: Shopify Payments charges a percentage of the order plus a fixed fee per transaction — online, in person, premium cards and international cards each carry their own rate. Second the platform side: a fixed monthly subscription that does not care whether you sold one order or ten thousand. Add the two and you get the number that actually matters, the total Shopify cost per order and per month.

The third trap is the gateway penalty. If your primary payment provider is not Shopify Payments, Shopify charges a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus — on top of whatever Stripe or PayPal charges you. On a $75 order on Basic that is $1.50 of pure penalty. Switching the selector above to a third-party gateway shows it immediately, and it is the single largest controllable line item on the bill.

2026 US Shopify fees by plan

PlanPay monthlyPay yearlyOnline cardIn personThird-party fee
Basic$39/mo$29/mo2.9% + $0.302.6% + $0.102%
Grow$105/mo$79/mo2.7% + $0.302.5% + $0.101%
Advanced$399/mo$299/mo2.5% + $0.302.4% + $0.100.6%
Plusfrom $2,300/mo—2.25% + $0.302.3% + $0.100.2%

Premium cards (American Express and other premium tiers) add roughly 0.6 percentage points, international cards add 1%, and a converted currency adds 1.5%. The legacy $5 Starter plan is closed to new stores, so the four plans above are the real choice. Always confirm current rates at shopify.com/pricing — they change by country and by plan.

Usage example

You sell on Basic, pay monthly ($39), take 300 orders of $75 with Shopify Payments online cards, 10% of them international. Processing is $75 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $2.475, plus $75 × 1% × 0.10 = $0.075 for the international share, so $2.55 per order. The subscription adds $39 ÷ 300 = $0.13. Shopify takes $2.68 per order, an effective rate of 3.6% of the sale, and $804 per month in total. On Grow the processing drops to $2.40 but the subscription rises to $0.35 per order — the comparison table recalculates that trade for your numbers instead of guessing.

Which plan is actually cheapest

The plan comparison above prices all four plans on your own volume, so the answer is data rather than a blog post's opinion. The pattern is stable: at low volume the subscription dominates and Basic wins; at high volume the per-order rate dominates and Advanced or Plus wins; Grow only wins in the narrow band in between, or when you need the extra staff accounts. Running the table for your real order count once a quarter is cheaper than arguing about list prices.

FAQ

How much does Shopify take per sale?

On a $75 order with Basic and Shopify Payments online cards, about $2.48 — 2.9% plus $0.30. Add the monthly subscription spread across your orders and the true cost is closer to $2.60–$2.70 per order at typical volume. Use the calculator above with your own numbers.

Does Shopify charge a transaction fee with Shopify Payments?

No. Third-party transaction fees (2% Basic, 1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced, 0.2% Plus) apply only when a non-Shopify payment provider is your primary provider. PayPal wallet payments, Shop Pay and manual payment methods are exempt while Shopify Payments is active.

Are there Shopify fees that are not per transaction?

Yes: the monthly subscription, $15 per chargeback on US Shopify Payments accounts (returned only if you win the dispute), 1.5% currency conversion when the customer pays in a currency your store does not use, and the +1% international card rate. Apps, shipping labels and ad spend sit outside Shopify's fee stack and belong in a profit calculator instead.
